A strong tree has deep roots

Andũ nĩguo ũtonga - It is our people that are our wealth
Indigenous knowledge (I.K.) is the unique knowledge and skills passed down generations through the practices and language within a specific community or ethnic group, e.g. traditional medicine, crafting, environmentally sustainable agricultural practices, storytelling, music, and art

As a consequence of colonialism, globalisation, urbanisation and displacement, I.K. and languages are rapidly vanishing. This is leading to a loss of identity, community cohesion and valuable indigenous knowledge.

“In recording conversations with my now 100 year old granny /cũcũ over 8years, I realised there was a wealth of ancient knowledge that even my own parents didn’t know, and that wasn’t being taught in schools in Kenya’s predominantly English and male scholar led education system.

My cũcũ’s stories are in our native language Kiembu, inaccessible even to my niece who doesn’t speak Kiembu, so I committed to preserve as much of my cũcũ’s wisdom as I could, translate and it as broadly as I could.

Cũcũ studio exists to connect us to our roots through the wisdom of our elders with a vision of prospering and healthy indigenous land and communities, in practice of their cultures
